PEO TV allows subscribers to watch any pre-loaded (i.e. stored in the servers) movies at any time. Subscribers have a control as to select when and what they want to watch. While watching the program customers can use trick play (pause, rewind and forward). When playing VOD or TSTV, system supports Trick play at different speeds. The speed can be 2x, 4x, 8x, 16x and 32x. The time shift facility is provided only for certain selected channels. The PEOTV VoD Store currently has movies, Tele-dramas, Documentary and Music Videos. Hotlist gives the list of popular VoDs as new arrival list newly arrive VoD and End soon lists movable VoD. This menu gives searching function by cast and by title. The subscriber can search for a VOD by movie name, actor name and director name and also to browse the VOD listing by category (genres).Play list gives details about ordered VoD and it gives a list of viewed VoD.
Upon selecting a VOD movie on EPG page, the subscriber can read the synopsis of movie and watch preview the VOD trailer. Thus based on this introduction the subscriber can easily decide if he/she likes to purchase the VOD movie. In PEO TV system, Bookmark is used to memorize VOD break point. The viewer can bookmark the movie when ever he want and do something else. When he comes back later he can continue from where he bookmarked the movie. The bookmark features a very convenient way for subscriber to watch VOD movies.

When a VOD is being played, a progress bar along and buttons for pause, play, rewind and forward are being displayed. This progress bar is presented to subscriber indicating the total length of VOD time and current watching time (elapsed time of watching). The system support Pay per view for single VOD. The subscriber will be given the VOD price and the option for him to choose payments or not watching this movie, once he choose to pay, the system will immediately charge the bill, then he will be allowed to watch this VOD.

Sri Lanka Telecom VisionCom, together with Government Film Unit (GFU) proudly launches "Lak Roo" a new television channel bringing local television viewers a totally new experience.
President Mahinda Rajapaksa yesterday inaugurated the transmission of Lak Roo television channel conducted by the Department of Information during the ceremony to felicitate veteran film maker Dr. Lester James Peries who celebrated his 90th birthday yesterday.


The GFU was born with Ceylon's independence on Feb 4 1948.The GFU's first production was Independence Returns to Ceylon . It was shown at Temple Trees in 1948.The Government Film Unit, celebrating its 60th year, intends to channel such valuable resources to the public over “Lak Ru”, to latest television channel. This rare collection treasures works of Italian maestro Julio Petroni , renowned British artiste Ralphkin, and legendary Dr. Lester James Peiris.With many contributions from such legendary film producers, Government Film Unit possesses a diverse collection of documentaries of global repute and many popular films of yesterday.


The rare collection boast more than 24 international awards won in Berlin, London and other international film festivals. However, many local viewers are yet in experience such great cinematic adventures and the Government Film Unit hopes to telecast the collection over “Lak Ru” for their benefit.

Time travel using Time Shifted TV

The TSTV feature provides flexibility for subscriber to watch TV at any time. The principle of TSTV is that the IPTV system has ability to store live TV program in the media server at Headend, similar to personal PVR. So the PEO TV stores live TV media content at network headend, instead of at the subscriber end of the network which is also referred to as n-PVR.

Channels are stored as time slots based on the program duration. These time slots are stored and presented to the user on the EPG in a well organized and in a user friendly manner. Such stored programs can be accessed through the TSTV menu. It provides the TV guide of the TV channel program line-up. In that section Audio/Video Transport (avt) work group is a sub division that I am keen on.The Audio/Video Transport Working Group was formed to specify a protocol for real-time transmission of audio and video over unicast and multicast UDP/IP.Work groups are open to all who want to participate, has discussions on an open mailing list, and may hold meetings at IETF meetings.

IPTV describes a system capable of receiving and displaying a video stream encoded as a series of Internet Protocol packets.Now Telco companies want to turn a "triple play" of voice, data, and video.Now let's see how IP TV works?

The set-top box will connect to the home DSL line and is responsible for reassembling the packets into a coherent video stream and then decoding the contents.The set-top box plays a major role in IP TV system.Our computers can do the same job as the set top box, but most people still don't have an always-on PC sitting beside the TV.So the set-top box came to play.then the quiestio is from where the set-top box get the pictures.Let's examine the source descriptively.


Most video enters the system at the telcom's national headend, where network feeds are pulled from satellites and encoded if necessary (often in MPEG-2, though H.264 and Windows Media are also possibilities).Then the video stream is broken up into IP packets and send via telco's core network.Telco's core network is a massive IP network that handles all sorts of other traffic (data, voice, etc.) in addition to the video.Because they use same network for all kinds of services(calls,internet..).When the company own the entire network it can control the quality of the services as he desire.Quality of service (QoS) tools can prioritize the video traffic to prevent delay or fragmentation of the signal.And with end-to-end control, the telcos can guarantee enough bandwidth for their signal at all times, which is key to providing the "just works" reliability consumers have come to expect from their television sets.With multicast streams, it is much more important to ensure that the network is well-engineered from beginning to end to ensure no errors creep into the video stream.As the user's set-top box only subscribes to the stream it can make no requests for additional information.To overcome this problem, multicast streams incorporate a variety of error correction measures such as forward error correction (FEC), in which redundant packets are transmitted as part of the stream.

How do they send hundreds of channels out to an IPTV subscriber with a DSL line?
They only send a few at a time. When a user changes the channel on their set-top box, the box does not "tune" a channel like a cable system.What happens instead is that the box switches channels by using the IP Group Membership Protocol (IGMP) v2 to join a new multicast group. When the local office receives this request, it checks to make sure that the user is authorized to view the new channel, then directs the routers in the local office to add that particular user to the channel's distribution list.In this way, only signals that are currently being watched are actually being sent.

Though multicast technology provides the answer to the problem of pumping the same content out to millions of subscribers at the same time, it does not help with features such as video on demand, which require a unique stream to the user's home. To support VoD and other service we need another unicast stream.This stream is typically controlled by the Real Time Streaming Protocol (RTSP), which enables DVD-style control over a multimedia stream and allows users to play, pause, and stop the program they are watching.The actual number of simultaneous video streams sent from the local office to the consumer varies by network. The reason is bandwidth.Simultaneous delivery of channels is necessary to keep IPTV competitive with cable.The bandwidth issues is one of the trickiest parts of implementing an IPTV network that will be attractive to consumers.For IPTV to become a viable whole-house solution, it will also need to support enough simultaneous channels to allow televisions in different rooms to display different content.

Because the set-top boxes will use Ethernet and IP, they should be simple to integrate into the existing home network, which includes a user's computer. STBs will be able to pull video and pictures from a home PC and display them on the television, and will also be able to easily network with other STBs on other televisions throughout the house.
